Uniformitarianism- Geological structures of the Earth resulted from cycles of observable processes and that these same processes operate continuously throughout time.
Ex. Silt is deposited by modern rivers in the same way it was deposited by ancient rivers.
In Chile, Darwin observed results of an earthquake. The land around the harbor lifted more than a meter.
With the elevation of the Andes Mountains, Charles was convinced that Lyell was correct in saying that geological changes require millions of years.
This trip took 5 years.
During this time period Darwin would be dropped off at one port and then picked up weeks or even months later at another port.
When he was on foot he traveled on many unmapped areas.
He found numerous amounts of fossils.
Analysis of Darwin's Data-
When Charles returned home, many experts look at his collections.
A bird specialist was the most interested in his collections.
Darwin had acquired 13 similiar but seperate finches.
Darwin had to abandon the testing of his hypothesis on natural selection in 1858.
Each finch had a different bill, specialized for certain food sources.
Within the next few years Darwin analyzed his data.
He found that the finches were blown off course and had to adapt to a new environment and food sources.
Which is why large differences could accumulate between species.
The Origin of Species-
This happened after he was approached by a young naturalist, Alfred Wallace.
Wallace wanted Charles to review his paper outlining of his own work on the process of natural selection.
After 21 years, Darwin finally published his own work on evolution by natural selection.
Both Darwin's and Wallace's work were presented to Linnaean Society of London in 1858.
One year later Darwin published the now famous book "The Origin of Species."
